Neil Maher, the Mayor of Westhoughton and a former veteran, will be driving to Poland alongside fellow mayors from Bolton to deliver support vehicles destined for Ukraine. This humanitarian effort comes as the world approaches the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Councillor Maher said: “As we approach the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I wanted to take the opportunity to show collective humanitarian support on behalf of Bolton. I facilitated a meeting with the Mayors of Bolton, Horwich, and Blackrod, along with the CEO and trustees of the International Aid Trust (IAT), to discuss how we, as a borough, can support their life-saving work in Ukraine.”
The outcome of the meeting was a commitment from Councillor Maher and other local mayors to personally drive and deliver support vehicles to Poland. From there, the vehicles will be transported onward to Ukraine to aid communities affected by the ongoing conflict.
This isn’t the first time Councillor Maher has been involved in supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. He has previously helped source medical supplies, equipment, and support vehicles for the International Aid Trust, a charity he praises for its dedication and impact.
The International Aid Trust (IAT) is a Christian charity committed to alleviating suffering and hardship worldwide. They provide essential support, including food, clothing, medical supplies, and financial aid, working closely with churches and trusted partners to deliver humanitarian assistance where it’s needed most.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, IAT has been particularly active in the region, sending over £15.75 million worth of aid to support those affected by the conflict. Their continued efforts have provided a vital lifeline to countless individuals and families living through the devastation of war.
Councillor Maher added: “This mission is not just about delivering vehicles; it’s about showing the people of Ukraine that they are not forgotten. The people of Bolton stand in solidarity with them, and we’re proud to contribute to this vital cause.”
